Introduction to QR Codes
QR codes, or Quick Response codes, were invented specifically for inventory management by Toyota's subsidiary, Denso Wave, in 1994[^1^]. These two-dimensional barcodes were designed to allow high-speed component scanning during the manufacturing process, and they have since become an integral part of our digital landscape.
Auxo Digital’s Success Story: Revolutionising Customer Care in Manufacturing with QR Codes
Let's delve into the world of manufacturing, where the humble QR code is making waves. In a manufacturing environment, QR codes can be used to track and monitor products, data, plant, equipment, and processes[^2^]. At Auxo Digital, we witnessed first-hand the transformative power of QR codes. We had the opportunity to strategise and implement a custom QR code solution for a bulk chemicals manufacturing client, revolutionising the way they share important technical documents and product information.
Our journey began with an evaluation of our client's current infrastructure and needs, which led us to develop a bespoke strategy. Following this, we executed on it.
In short, this involved placing QR codes directly on the product packaging, giving customers instant access to key information. We also developed a sophisticated and user-friendly web platform offering all the functionality required to upload, edit and serve product information. This seamless process from scanning the QR code to accessing the correct document resulted in a significant reduction in requests for technical information. This allowed the client's customer success department to focus on more critical tasks.
Other Applications of QR Codes in Manufacturing
Inventory Management with QR Codes
The versatility of QR codes is well demonstrated in the manufacturing industry. Take, for instance, Toyota's innovative use of QR codes for inventory management. This implementation enabled high-speed component scanning during the manufacturing process, a task that traditional barcodes could not handle. QR codes were created to help Toyota track parts when their barcode system ran out of capacity[^1^]. Even without dealing with high numbers of components exceeding regular barcode capacity, inventory management can benefit from incorporating QR codes due to smartphone compatibility[^1^].
Track Equipment Maintenance
Good maintenance tracking can reduce costs and enable closer attention to maintenance and replacement needs. Convenient, accurate maintenance tracking offered by QR inventory tags makes this process feasible and easy for large organisations[^1^].
Using QR Codes in Business Stationery and Invoices
Including a QR code on items such as business stationery and invoices leads directly to a customer service site, offering helpful information like contact numbers, user guides, and return labels[^1^].
Work Instructions Access
Visual work instruction systems like REWO enable creating QR codes that can be printed and placed around the shop floor, providing direct access to SOPs or WIs as needed[^1^].
The Future of QR Codes in Manufacturing
QR codes continue to play a pivotal role in manufacturing, enhancing customer service, improving inventory management, and providing instant access to technical information. At Auxo Digital, we're passionate about utilising the potential of digital technology to shape the future of digital manufacturing.
